Today's good climate and environment news

Good morning!

From scientific discoveries to activist wins, here are the latest news stories showcasing the people taking on climate change and nature loss.

🪧 Black-led climate groups are fighting back in the face of Trump

Trump’s recent actions, including stopping billions in federal grants being sent to environmental justice organisations, have come as a blow – but groups on the ground are determined to keep the fight alive. Despite this hole in their finances, Black-led climate orgs are seeking out funding from non-federal sources, employing a range of old-school tactics like boycotts, and preparing to take legal action to get the funds they had signed contracts for back.

“We are who we need to save our planet,” said Brown. “[The government] clearly isn’t going to do it, so we have to do it.”

🐺 How wolves can bring down carbon

Reintroducing wolves to the Scottish Highlands could allow woodlands to regrow and absorb carbon to the tune of 1m tonnes per year, researchers have found. The last time wolves could be found in Scotland was around 250 years ago, and in their absence the number of red deer has exploded to around 400,000. Bringing back these predators would lower the red deer population, whose penchant for tree saplings stops forests from naturally regenerating.

🌳 The tiny forests revitalising cities

Planting tiny forests in cities can boost biodiversity in overlooked and disused spaces, attracting over 500 animal and plant species in the first three years. As well as filtering air pollution in traffic-heavy urban areas, they can offer a reprieve from the heat in hot summer months, and bring mental health benefits for city residents whose encounters with nature are few and far between.
