🌱💡 Carbon removal rocks

Today's good climate and environment news

Good morning!

From scientific discoveries to activist wins, here are the latest news stories showcasing the people taking on climate change and nature loss.

🪨 Capturing carbon with rocks

Rocks naturally remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, but at a glacial pace that takes millennia â€“ not much good to us if we want to meet significant climate goals in the next five years. But scientists have now discovered that after blasting these minerals in a kiln at 1,400 degrees celsius, they carry out this reaction much more rapidly, which could play a pivotal role in countering climate change. A potential application is adding heated rocks to agricultural land, where they’ll both boost soil productivity and permanently store carbon dioxide.

🔋 China’s clean energy surge

Clean energy made up a massive 10% of China’s GDP in 2024 – a sum worth US$1.9 trillion. The country’s investment in clean energy technologies like solar, electric vehicles and batteries was nearly equal to the amount invested in fossil fuels across the entire world, with further growth expected over the next year.

🚢 Why Florida is deliberately sinking a ship

An ocean liner that first set sail in the 1950s is being thoroughly cleaned in preparation for being sunk off the coast of Florida. Here, it will become the world’s biggest artificial reef, attracting a huge variety of marine life and boosting biodiversity.
