Today's good climate and environment news

Happy Friday!

Here’s a quick look at today’s good news.

🐸 Imaginative ways to help species survive

Researchers have put together a catalogue of ways to protect animal species as the climate changes, giving conservationists and volunteers the tools to act fast. These solutions range from ‘cod logs’ providing wooden shelter for fish, to frog hotels used as temporary habitats after wildfires, to putting sprinklers in trees to cool down fruit bats.

🇺🇸 The US climate policies cemented ahead of Trump

In his final months in office, Biden has unleashed a torrent of environmental policies, at least some of which, it’s hoped, will be safe under Trump. These include offering almost $23bn in loans for utilities, banning offshore drilling, requiring data centres for AI to be powered with clean energy, and committing to a new climate goal of slashing emissions by 61-66% by 2035.

🍔 How a meat tax could generate billions

Putting a climate tax on meat – reflecting its true cost on our land and climate – would cut Germany’s total emissions by 2%, a new study has found. Researchers estimated that the demand for beef would drop by 53%, with people shifting to foods with a lower climate impact, like vegetables. This tax would bring in €8.2bn every year, which could be put towards sustainable agriculture and redistributed to lower-income households, easing the burden of the tax.
