šŸŒ±šŸ’” Designing in harmony with nature

Today's good climate and environment news

Good morning!

From scientific discoveries to activist wins, here are the latest news stories showcasing the people taking on climate change and nature loss.

šŸ Shifting our approach to design

An exhibition at Londonā€™s Design Museum spotlights how buildings and products can integrate the needs of animals and nature. It aims to show the benefits of overturning our current ā€˜human-centricā€™ approach to design. Examples include a pavilion that encourages wasps to nest; using oysters instead of a concrete wave breaker; and an installation made of seaweed.

ā€œWe extract what we need and then we build what we want. But actually weā€™re interdependent with all these living systems, so itā€™s really a new way of thinking that weā€™re trying to encourage.ā€

šŸ”Œ A more climate-friendly stove

New plug-in electric stoves that donā€™t require installation could be the alternative to fossil fuel-guzzling gas ovens your kitchen needs. The stoveā€™s design also includes a smart battery that charges when electricity rates are low, saving money. As well as contributing to greenhouse gas emissions ā€“ even when they arenā€™t being used ā€“ gas cookers emit pollutants that are associated with asthma and cancer.

ā€œYou wouldnā€™t stand over the tailpipe of a car breathing in the exhaust from that car. And yet nearly 50 million households [in the United States] stand over a gas stove, breathing the same pollutants in their homes.ā€

ā˜•ļø Climate-resilient coffee

In South Sudan, a 100-year old coffee variant is raising farmersā€™ hopes. While unpredictable weather is skyrocketing the prices of common coffee crops, the excelsa plant can survive the toughest drought and heat, and is resistant to many pests and diseases. While it currently only makes up 1% of the global market, it offers a potential route to financial independence for many of the countryā€™s smallholders.
