Today's good climate and environment news

Good morning!

From scientific discoveries to activist wins, here are the latest news stories showcasing the people taking on climate change and nature loss.

💧 Recycling California’s wastewater

Faced with the prospect of frequent droughts being further exacerbated by climate change, cities in Southern California are eyeing the idea of recycling their wastewater. This would massively boost water security in the region, where cities like LA rely on water that’s funnelled from over 300 miles away. And while it might seem off-putting at first glance, water purification technology can recycle sewage into clean drinking water – Orange County has recycled more than 450 billion gallons of water this way since 2008.

👨‍🌾 The farmers safeguarding Australia’s soil

Regenerative agriculture’s popularity is rising in Australia, with farmers experimenting with natural ways to make their lands healthier. For instance, some are installing insectaries to attract bugs, reducing the number of pests without the need for chemical pesticides. By keeping soil healthy, regenerative farming techniques make agriculture more resilient to the impacts of climate change and mean farms will be able to operate sustainably for decades to come.

🐓 One hen for every household

Towns in France and Belgium are distributing chickens to residents, with the birds helping to counter food waste by gobbling up kitchen scraps – and giving their owners free eggs in return. What started out as a joke has become a popular circular economy practice that cuts methane emissions, saves money on food, and teaches kids about the importance of caring for animals.
