🌱💡 The rise in repair

Today's good climate and environment news

Good morning!

From scientific discoveries to activist wins, here are the latest news stories showcasing the people taking on climate change and nature loss.

🛠️ The boom in repair shops

Repair cafes, pop-ups, and shops are on the rise in the UK, giving volunteers the chance to learn something new and save an old vacuum or lamp from the landfill. With 80% of the lifetime emissions of our electronic appliances created before we even take them home, giving these items a second life goes a long way in limiting waste and the harm it has on our planet. A new scheme is encouraging repair by giving people 50% off the cost – important for shifting mindsets, given how deceptively inexpensive many of the household devices we use every day are.

💦 An all-natural fertiliser

Farmers in Vermont are using a fertilising technique that harks back to ancient China and Rome: urine. This truly free and renewable resource contains high levels of nitrogen and phosphorus, important nutrients for crop production. The urine is pasteurised before it is ‘peecycled’, and has been proven to double the yields of crops like kale and spinach without the emissions and environmental damage of synthetic fertilisers.

😎 Climatemaxxing

You might have heard of looksmaxxing, sunmaxxing and watermaxxing – no, I haven’t either – but what about climatemaxxing? Rather than a restrictive, carbon-counting approach to protecting the planet, Grist argues we should see our climate actions in a positive, productive light. Cycling to work, installing solar panels, eating beans for dinner – it’s not a fretful response to disaster, it’s a cool, assured, and meme-friendly climatemaxxing.
