šŸŒ±šŸ’” How states will stay green under Trump

Today's good climate and environment news

Good morning!

From scientific discoveries to activist wins, here are the latest news stories showcasing the people taking on climate change and nature loss.

šŸ’Ŗ The states pledging to keep the climate fight alive

From California putting $10bn towards climate projects, to Massachusetts pushing geothermal energy further, to Maine installing 100,000 heat pumps, US states are committed to accelerating climate progress under Trumpā€™s shadow. The US Climate Alliance, a coalition founded in 2017 with this mission, includes the governors of 24 states ā€“ and even red states are unlikely to let the influx of new jobs and investments spurred by the Inflation Reduction Act disappear.

ā€œThe transition to a renewable energy future is unstoppable,ā€ said Petersen, of the Los Angeles Cleantech Incubator. ā€œThe genie is out of the bottle.ā€

šŸ‡ŖšŸ‡ŗ EU plans to ban PFAS

The EU is gearing up to ban ā€˜forever chemicalsā€™ in consumer products. PFAS chemicals, which donā€™t break down in the environment and pose risks to human health, are used in thousands of goods we use every day, from lipstick to frying pans. Some exceptions to the proposed ban will include essential items like asthma inhalers and semiconductors.

šŸŒ”ļø The home heating solution thatā€™s about to take off

Ground source heat pumps, which run on geothermal energy, could bring clean heating and cooling to over 7m homes by 2035, a new report from the US Department of Energy has found. Currently, this under-the-radar climate solution is providing energy-efficiency to just 1m households. In times of peak demand, like the height of summer and depths of winter, this would be equivalent to shutting down dozens of coal or gas-fired power plants.
